On September 27, 2018, the 12th Study Information Day for students of the German Schools Abroad took place at the Deutsche Evangelische Oberschule (DEO) in Cairo. The event has a long-standing tradition and annually attracts many German universities and universities of applied sciences. The seven recognized German Schools, of which four offer the German graduation certificate Abitur, reflected once again the high interest by students in German universities.

A total of 450 students from grades 11 and 12 attended the event which has been organized by the German Academic Exchange Service Cairo Office (DAAD) since 2006. The students who are all fluent in German, attended 28 presentations offered throughout the day and were provided with insights into the German higher education system by DAAD staff. In addition to the introductions into specific fields of study like Engineering Sciences, Veterinary Medicine and Business Studies, which were presented by university representatives, as well as alumni of the German Schools and the DAAD, the attending universities were given the opportunity to present their institutions.

The attending universities displayed the diversity of the German higher education landscape through both their regional and thematic diversity. The Phillips-Universität Marburg, Technische Universität Clausthal, Freie Universität Berlin, HTWK Leipzig, Brandenburgische Technische Universität Cottbus-Senftenberg, Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg,

Technische Universität München, Christian-Albrecht-Universität zu Kiel, Technische Universität Darmstadt, as well as the German University in Cairo and the Cairo University participated in the presentations for the Study Information Day 2018. Furthermore, every university was represented with a booth at which the students received information material as well as individual counseling by university representatives. The Technische Hochschule Deggendorf, the Munich Business School, the Universität Bamberg and the Bayerischen Betreuungsinitiative Deutsche Auslands- und Partnerschulen (BayBIDS) were also represented with information material here.

Many of the students already had specific ideas about their future studies, while others were still in the beginning of the orientation phase. For both target groups, the event provided many opportunities to explore a potential future at one of the attending institutions. Experiences of previous years showed, that a majority of graduates from the German Schools opt for study programmes abroad if their financial situation allows for it. Of those graduates, most students decide to study in Germany. The DAAD in partnership with the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development, who was participating in the information event as well, support some of these students by awarding an average of 6 to 8 scholarships per year to the best graduates both on an academic level and based on their social engagement.
