Information about the project

The project “Scientific Storytelling” is a cooperation between the Goethe-Institute Cairo and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Regional Office Cairo. The project has been established in 2017 and has been running since then successfully by both institutions.

The goal of the project is to foster the relationship between science on the one hand and journalism on the other hand, in order to support the transfer of knowledge to a broader public and to enhance the general response to the achievements of researchers from all disciplines. Therefore and within the project, we would like to train scientists in dealing with journalists. Furthermore, the project is supposed to strengthen scientific journalism in Egypt in general and to raise awareness for its importance. At the same time, the project shall create new networks between scientists, researchers and journalists in order to stimulate their mutual exchange and to facilitate the access for scientists to the media and respectively for journalists to the world of academia.

The Workshop

In the realm of this project, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Goethe-Institute Cairo will organize a two-day workshop for max. 15 scientists and researchers who are running German-Egyptian cooperation projects. On the first day, scientists will learn how to talk about science to non-scientists. On the second day, they will meet with journalists who have been trained in a separate workshop on writing about scientific topics.
The aim of the workshop is to train scientists how to pitch their studies or results towards journalists so that they are interested in covering the story, how to market scientific projects and how to interact and attract the younger generation in particular.
A delegation trip for selected workshop participants to relevant scientific institutions in Germany may be organized in November/December 2020, depending on the developments in both countries Egypt and Germany due to the spread of COVID-19. The trip aims at enhancing the skills gained from the workshops by meeting experts in the field of science journalism in Germany. Details regarding the application process will be communicated to the workshop participants.

Please kindly note: As for the current situation, both the workshop for the scientists and researchers as well as the joint workshop of scientists and journalists will be held most probably
