The GERSS (German Egyptian Research Short-Term Scholarship) programme is one of the most demanded scholarship programmes at the DAAD Regional Office Cairo. Jointly with the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MHESR), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides an opportunity for young Egyptian scientists to finance short term scholarships in Germany. The scholarship enables advanced graduate students and young scientists to pursue part of their master’s, doctoral or post-doctoral research in a specific research project at German universities, archives, libraries or research institutes and may be awarded for a period from three to six months.

In 2020, 14 out of 31 candidates have been awarded the scholarship after being interviewed by a distinguished independent bi-national selection committee. The biggest share of scholarships has been awarded to candidates from Ain Shams University and Alexandria University. Due to the current situation caused by COVID-19, the interviews took place this year virtually in September 2020.
