Under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Osman Elkhosht, the President of Cairo University and Tarek Fahmy Elwakil, the Dean of NILES, the workshop was attended by experts from Cairo University, Ain Shams University, Minia University, Benha University, Zagazig University, Mansoura University, Sohag University and the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP). The DAAD Cairo Office was pleased to facilitate the participation of the keynote speaker and guest of honour Prof. Dr. med. During the workshop, the participants were introduced to state-of-the-art laser applications in vocal cord surgery and early diagnosis and therapy of laryngeal diseases. The scientific programme included a tour through the National Institute of Laser Enhanced Sciences to get to know the equipment and services offered to patients all over Egypt. The participants of the workshop highlighted the need to train junior physicians in using carbon dioxide laser in laryngeal diseases therapy. They also recommended the use of electromyography (EMG) in diagnosing speech sound disorder (SSD) and to foster a closer cooperation among physicians of ear, nose, and throat, speech-language pathology, neurophysiology, and laser experts. The workshop coordinator Prof. Hazem Mohamed Ali Saleh from Cairo University mentioned that the international workshop on laser applications in laryngeal surgery benefitted from German and international scientific expertise. The potential of the NILES in organising similar workshops on a regular basis could provide continuous medical training and education in accordance of international standards.
