DAAD Science Lecture:
“Obesity: Challenges, Opportunities and Best Practice”
November 11, 2019 - from 3 PM – 7 PM, Conrad Hotel Cairo,
1191 Nile Corniche, Cairo
The format “Science Lecture” will be organised for the second time by the DAAD Regional Office Cairo. In 2017, the first Science Session took place in Sudan and focused on the topic “Teaching Identities - Social Sciences, Didactics, and German Studies”. This year we will focus on the challenging medical topic of obesity in Egypt and Germany. Experts from Egypt and Germany will present and discuss challenges, opportunities and best practice examples in the treatment of obesity research.
The constantly increasing obesity rates worldwide are one of the main health challenges that our society must cope with nowadays. Obesity and its more severe form adiposity are abnormal or excessive fat accumulations that present a risk to health. Both medical conditions increase the risk of several severe illnesses like diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular diseases. In Germany, around one 1/4 of the adult population is obese. And studies reveal, that around 19 million Egyptians suffer from obesity, which equals 35 percent of all Egyptian adults. Although the countries are trying to raise more awareness in the health sector, for instance with the initiative “100 Million Healthy Lives” in Egypt, there is still a lot of work to be done to solve this health crisis.
The DAAD Science Lecture will discuss in three sessions different aspects and approaches in the research and treatment of obesity and adiposity both in Germany and Egypt.
