The DAAD Regional Office Cairo cordially invites you to a Public Lecture Evening on "Urban Planning and Development" on 25 August 2019 at 5:30 pm on the premises of the DAAD Regional Office Cairo
During the last decades, the MENA region witnessed one of the highest urbanisation rates worldwide causing major challenges on different fronts. The interplay between environmental and social issues are among the crucial factors to be considered in developing innovative measures to tackle today’s urban challenges.
Within the framework of COSIMENA, the DAAD will host a public lecture evening to shed light on current research outcomes and discuss collaboration opportunities between scientists from Egypt and Germany.
“The Influence of Urban and Environmental Planning on Micro Climate, Health and Energy Consumption” by Prof. Dr. Sahar Sodoudi, Professor in Urban Climatology and Head of the Department for Urban Climate at Freie Universität Berlin
This lecture will focus on the negative impact of climate change on the health and energy sector within urban contexts, where it is strongly linked with the urban heat island effect caused by urbanisation (dense sealed surfaces with high heat capacity). The importance of climate change mitigation strategies will be discussed by showing different examples from the MENA region. Based on real and projected climate data from Egypt, also measures to evaluate the effectiveness of such strategies will be presented.
“Co-production of Knowledge in Urban Development of Countries in Transition: Egypt and Tunisia” by Dr.-Ing. Hassan Elmouelhi, Senior Researcher and Lecturer at the Habitat Unit – International Urbanism and Design at Technische Universität Berlin
In this lecture, the focus will be on the research that has been done in Egypt and Tunisia since 2011 on informal settlements. Student’s fieldwork in such urban contexts is taking place within a complex intercultural atmosphere between international and local students and residents of informal settlements that share to the knowledge production about these communities but are also not free from difficulties and risks. By presenting selected case studies, strategies to encounter these challenges through adapting teaching methods and activities will be discussed.
